AI tools are increasingly being used to support accessibility from generating alt text and summaries to simplifying content and creating captions. While these AI tools can offer benefits, they also introduce new risks when used without care, context, and human review.
This session explores how AI intersects with accessibility in websites, focusing on practical, real-world use cases rather than hype or tools. We will examine where AI can meaningfully support accessibility efforts, where it commonly falls short, and how misuse can unintentionally create new barriers for disabled users. We will be focusing on topics including AI-generated alt text, content summarization, readability simplification, and the importance of human-in-the-loop workflows.
Attendees will learn how to evaluate AI-assisted accessibility features critically, how to integrate them responsibly into existing content workflows, and how to align AI use with accessibility standards and inclusive design principles. The main goal is to help Drupal teams and other web practitioners use AI as a supportive aid, while keeping people with disabilities at the center of design decisions.
